This change cannot be understated. Over-packaging is a huge problem that we have all experienced. Unnecessary packaging of all types is causing unnecessary problems on a global scale. Light My Fire understands that sustainability is a resource. Packaging is not just a protective shield carrying information but also an opportunity for something more like a secondary purpose, or for something less.
Our holistic approach to sustainability has implemented some excellent ideas.
SECONDUSE - CIRCBAGS
We introduce fantastic little packing bags made from recycled PET (a highly recyclable plastic resin) that can be used again and again. So when you buy a meal kit, for example, you also get a reusable and recycled bag with second-purpose added value. The bags vary in size and have a mesh designed to not only allow our beautiful color range to shine through but to also allow the contents to breathe. The bags will also be sold separately and can be repurposed for any of your needs.
RECYCLED CARDBOARD & REMOVED ALL
SINGLE USE PLASTICS - PIN PACKS
We are changing all cardboard material to 100% recycled, unbleached FSC certified cardboard with energy efficient UV printing, without chemical coating. So less chemicals and less energy used in production. And of course, easy to recycle!
KRAFT BAGS & WOODEN DISPLAY UNITS
The idea is to encourage retailers and consumers to avoid packaging altogether. We have replaced our cardboard product displays with 2-layer kraftbags. Here, bulk products can be shown in a more accessible way and individual items can be picked in a “grocery shop” style. Not only does this save on packaging but also we love the openness and natural vibe.
NEW TRANSPORT PACKAGING
AND INNER BAGS
Save on space, save on weight, save on resources. Shipping air is what happens when products are placed into boxes that cannot fit efficiently around the items inside. We have replaced all inner boxes with 100% recycled brown paper bags. By adjusting the size of the bag to the product, we eliminate the problem of unnecessary size, weight and air in our shipments. This resourceful and sustainable approach to shipping combines a modern touch with the classic old style “grocery shop” feel and have resulted in a 25% decrease of volume.
